A covers album? You got to be kidding me?
Listen While You Read
Well actually no, I’m not kidding at all.
I found this album by chance while looking for the guitar tab for the Jeffery Foucault song Northbound 35. All I found was the same song by Richard Shindell. What the hell was going on here?
A little research later and I have a new album playing on my stereo.
The other well know song on this album (apart from the Bruce Springsteen one) is the title track inspiration, Lawrence KS , originally sung by Josh Ritter. In the case of both Jeffery and Josh I am not sure that these cover versions are as good as the originals, but when added into this album they fit with the other songs perfectly using Richard voice to tie them all together.
The other really interesting song on this album is the “Humpback Whale”. This is a song about the whalers that used to work out of Ballina and Byron Bay on the east coast of Australia. This is the area I grew up, so I was slightly shocked when I first heard a North American folk musician, now living in Argentina singing about my home. In fact my family business, a plant nursery, actually used to be located in the old “ruins” of the whale factory in Byron Bay where I was always amazed at the huge chain links fused into the ground that must have acted as anchor points for moving the whales around.
All in all this would have to be my favourite collection of covers I have ever heard. You can grab the CD here if you are keen. Otherwise I will leave you with a Spanish song to go.
